Was there ever a 5 speed auto in our cars?

Ill assume this is either misinformation.. or a specific trim option? never heard of 5 speed autos on the mn12s though.

I have found that site to be a bit of a mix of accurate and inaccurate information. Feels like it's compiled by AI.

Interestingly, I distinctly remember researching something on there which was inaccurate for Thunderbird but accurate for Cougar. It may even have been transmission related.


MN12 never had a 5-speed automatic. Lincoln LS, Retrobird, and Jaguar X-Type were the first Ford cars with that transmission, along with Aviator, Explorer, and retro Mustang before 2011.

And I would have to research the actual gearing. But my guess is that that 5-speed actually doesn't differ much in terms of 1st gear and top gear gearing, but rather adds one additional ratio in-between. Which is great of course for outright acceleration; but for me personally, I would prefer a greater ratio spread for more efficient high-speed cruising.

There's not enough outputs on the eec for more gears. I looked into the 6/10 speed, it takes 6 outputs.

No. Other than the 5-speed manual SCs, all 89-93 cars got the AOD, and all 94-97 cars got the 4r70, both of which are 4-speed automatics.

yeah the cougar one if fairly accurate. 8.1 seconds to 60, 4 speed auto, ect. I trusted automobile catalog until i saw this though. I actually wouldnt be suprised if it was compiled by ai and they got the tbird mixed up with the explorer. Plenty 97 explorers have the 5 speed autos.
